Just like the trunk of a tree the core of our body helps us to remain upright and in shape. Whether we’re walking, playing sport, dancing or simply doing housework – a strong healthy core makes everything function better.
As a person becomes increasingly out of shape, they often lose motivation and avoid exercise simply saying they are just too tired. But unfortunately, they don’t realise that the less active they are the weaker their body core becomes.
How a strong core helps us in everyday life
There are so many actions we do automatically without really thinking about it, such as bending over to pick things up off the floor, tying our shoe laces, carrying groceries and just the simple act of sitting down and standing up – all of which require good balance. As we age and lead a more sedentary lifestyle, we lose our agility and are more likely to experience stiffness and back and joint pain.
So, why the decline?
Our body’s core is made up of many muscles, which all work in together to enable us to do everyday things.
- Stabiliser muscles are attached to the spine and they help us move.
- The other muscles are referred to as ‘movers’ which support the stabilisers. When these muscles aren’t extended properly and regularly, just like any machine they seize up and performance is compromised.
How can you rebuild your core strength and regain your fitness and dexterity?
With a few simple lifestyle changes you can significantly improve and strengthen your core muscles.
If you are overweight and unfit, losing weight is important. This requires changing your dietary habits and eating a well-balanced nutritious diet including lots of fruit and vegies, lean protein, grains and dairy.
As a society, both children and adults have become more and more sedentary. With an ever-increasing reliance on computers and smart technology most of us spend far too much time living our lives in a sitting position. However, there are numerous things you can do throughout the day to help strengthen your core muscles. Taking a twenty-minute walk daily is a great way to improve your health and muscle strength. It may not seem like much, but every little bit counts.
Also, a visit to your local Chiropractor Clinic is an excellent choice to check that all of your joints are working properly. Our resident Chiropractor – Dr Chris Ientile at Empowering Wellness Clinic Burleigh, can treat subluxations (vertebrae that are misaligned), which will help make core strengthening exercises easier and more effective.
Once you’ve undergone chiropractic treatment, the next important step is to make sure you practice good posture all the time, helping to strengthen and realign your muscles back into proper position. Specific exercises and stretching are vital to optimising core strength.
Many of our clients at Empowering Wellness Clinic enjoy the benefits of yoga. Through our Natural Therapies, we encourage patients to consciously listen to their body. Yoga is a wonderful way to do this, as well as to soften muscles and joints. Not only will you look and feel better; your body will be able to handle everyday tasks much easier.
