Undoubtedly, we are connected to the cycles of Nature, and Autumn brings dryness alongside its beauty.
When dry skin is the symptom we usually only choose to wear more moisturiser cream, which is great, but lets remember a wholesome way to rehydrate inside and out.
- Nourish Internally – If your skin is dry and itchy, try to avoid dry foods, and eat foods that are a little oily and warm. Eat plenty of healthy fats like butter and olive oil.
- Coconut Oil – Coconut oils emollient properties are just fabulous! Emollients fill the spaces between skin cells, creating a smooth surface. That’s why the saturated fatty acids that occur naturally in coconut oil do wonders to hydrate and smooth the skin. Both topically as ingested, coconut is on our side this autumn. For dry skin, coconut oil can be used daily on even the most sensitive parts of your body. These include the area underneath your eyes and around your mouth.
- Antioxidants – When skin is dry, it means it’s exposed to damaging elements. Antioxidant rich foods can minimize damage from environmental toxins and help our bodies make healthy cells. Some are blueberries, beans, lentils and carrots.
- Colloidal oat meal – Oatmeal has long been a traditional solution for soothing irritated skin, a remedy passed down through generations. A study conducted in 2015 highlighted the efficacy behind this age-old recommendation, confirming its effectiveness.Colloidal oatmeal, rich in antioxidants and possessing anti-inflammatory properties, works wonders in calming skin irritation. It is particularly beneficial for alleviating itching. Following an oatmeal bath, it’s essential to moisturize your skin to seal in the protective barrier.
Creating an oatmeal bath at home is simple. Grind oatmeal into a fine powder using a food processor, then mix it into warm water. Alternatively, there are numerous commercial products available that facilitate an oatmeal soak.
- Black Sesame Oil – Black sesame oil offers multiple benefits for the skin due to its rich content of vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Its advantages include moisturizing properties, thanks to its ability to deeply hydrate and replenish dry or dehydrated skin. Additionally, the oil’s antioxidant components, such as vitamin E, safeguard the skin from free radical damage, thus preventing premature aging. Furthermore, black sesame oil possesses anti-inflammatory compounds that can soothe and calm irritated or inflamed skin, making it suitable for conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Regular application of black sesame oil can promote a more radiant and youthful complexion by improving skin tone and texture. To use black sesame oil on the skin, simply apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and massage gently until fully absorbed. It can be used alone as a moisturizer or combined with other skincare products. Alternatively, incorporate black sesame oil into an oil cleansing routine to remove makeup and impurities. Additionally, you can mix it with other beneficial oils like jojoba or rosehip oil for a customized skincare blend. For hair and scalp treatment, massage black sesame oil into the scalp and hair, leave it on for a few hours or overnight, then shampoo as usual to promote healthy hair growth and combat dryness and dandruff. Before using black sesame oil, perform a patch test, especially if you have sensitive skin, to ensure no adverse reactions occur.
- Avoid very hot showers – Hot showers can worsen dry skin for several reasons. Firstly, they strip away the skin’s natural oils, essential for maintaining moisture and a healthy skin barrier. Additionally, prolonged exposure to hot water leads to increased water loss through evaporation, exacerbating dryness. The dilation of blood vessels caused by hot water can result in redness and inflammation, particularly in individuals with sensitive or dry skin. Furthermore, the heat can disrupt the skin’s barrier function, making it more vulnerable to environmental factors and moisture loss.
